Why another Climate Change Group?
Does it seem crazy to form another group?
The problem I see is that each group, party and individual is asking for different actions.
350.org and 100 months focus on the target for pollution and the urgency for action.
For  many charities climate change is only one of their objectives and they offer various targets.
Rallies and demonstrations often focus on one small part like the 3rd runway at Heathrow or Kingsnorth Power Station.
Most groups would probably agree that they want a safe climate but it becomes lost in the detail.

Why a safe climate?
No one has yet defined what is a safe climate. 2 years ago cutting emissions appeared to provide a route to safety. Now the scientists have shown that this alone will not be enough. Meanwhile the Arctic Icecap has unexpectedly shrunk.

What will be discovered next year? Meanwhile our emissions are growing faster than ever before.

Half measures abound but we need to start with the right questions.

What is  a safe climate?

How can we get there as soon as possible?

Definition
A safe climate is loosely defined as a climate in which major unexpected changes such as the loss of the Arctic Icecap or the decimation of forests are unlikely.
At present this appears to be a global average temperature half a degree below the present and ocean acidity somewhat less than the present level.
Safety can best be determined as being similar to past stable periods in the earth's recent history.
The consensus of science may modify this up or down as more is known about the resilience of the land and ocean carbon cycle.
Means of Achievement
The methods needed to achieve a safe climate must be studied for each country separately by the government of that country.
The authors of Climate Code Red claim they must include
  1. Drastic reductions in carbon emissions to near zero
  2. Removal of CO2 from the atmosphere
  3. Some short term global cooling measures
  4. A national emergency  will be required to achieve success
Measures are likely to absorb a significant proportion of GDP ( say 10%) and contribute very substantially to reflation after the credit crunch.
Some countries have contributed more to the present pollution and must bear the major cost of the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere.
The country plans combined need to be evalated to see how quickly they are likely to bring about a safe climate.
